Q: I’m a bit worried about the safety of the necklaces for young children. How do they do up?
A: Being a parent, I am very aware of the safety issue. I offer various options including one where there are no fastenings at all on the jewellery. They simply overlap on the wrist or neck. This is to ensure safety with the younger participants, but also means that the children can use the jewellery themselves, without having to ask you to put them on and off! For older children I use magnetic claps on the necklace. These stay on really well, but will come undone if the necklace gets caught on something.
Q: Do the children cut wire?
A: No. Older children use pliers to twist wire, but I do any cutting. I do this away from the children.
Q: I really want more children to be able to come. Can you increase the numbers?
A: I limit numbers to ensure that I have time to help all the children. I have to finish off each piece of jewellery and also give help and advice. If I increased the numbers, I would risk frustrating children who would have to wait longer for help. However, I can increase the total number to 9, if older children are doing the overlap jewellery as they do need less help. Very few tables can take more than 9 children, 9 bead boards and lots of beads!
